A frame that can't rot
Ellis built the deck on a plastic subframe. It doesn't rot, so water under the deck isn't a problem for the structure.
Case study · Decking contractor, the Cotswolds
A sunroom that kept filling with water became a curved Trex deck with a bespoke outdoor kitchen. Trex UK chose it to feature.
Featured by Trex UKThe owners wanted to keep the old and the new side by side, with a transition that lifted both spaces instead of hiding one behind the other.
The area had been a sunroom, and it held a lot of water. So before the design, Ellis had to deal with the water.

A deck is only as good as the frame under it. In a wet space, that matters even more.
Ellis built the deck on a plastic subframe. It doesn't rot, so water under the deck isn't a problem for the structure.
A large drain pipe runs down the middle of the deck to carry rainwater away from all four sides of the building.
Carmel boards from Trex, a low-maintenance finish that is built to last, and backed by a 50-year limited residential warranty.
Symmetry was the one thing the owners would not compromise on.

Every planter, every doorway and every cut had to match its opposite. That takes measuring twice and a lot of patience, and it's why the finished deck looks calm.
The curve makes sense because of the angles of the courtyard. Ellis didn't want to cut a straight line across the cobbles, so the deck follows the shape of the space instead.

At the end of the consultation, the owners mentioned they would like an outdoor kitchen.
Ellis had a brainwave: Trex is a versatile product, so why not build the kitchen out of it? He designed it around their pizza oven. It’s a fully bespoke Trex kitchen, made from the same boards as the deck, with a log store underneath.

What people usually ask after seeing it.
It can, if the structure under it is built for it. On this job Ellis used a plastic subframe that does not rot, plus a drain pipe through the middle to carry rainwater away. Every site is different, so he looks at the water first when he visits.
Yes. Ellis built a bespoke outdoor kitchen from Trex boards, designed around the owners’ pizza oven. If you would like something similar, tell him what you want to cook on and he will design around it.
