Home/Projects/Raglan pool deck

Case study · Pool decking, Raglan, Monmouthshire

Composite pool deck in Raglan.

The first deck failed. Ellis rebuilt it, made it about four times the size and finished it with lighting and a herringbone inlay.

The brief

A deck that didn't last.

The owners already had a composite deck beside their pool. It had been built previously, then failed.

It was also only about a quarter of the size it is now. Ellis was brought in to rebuild it.

Under the boards

Rebuilt from the frame up.

A pool deck has to be right underneath before it can look right on top.

01

Start again, properly

The failed deck came out and a new frame went in around the pool, with the groundwork done before any boards were laid.

02

Built off the old patio

Ellis was building off the side of the existing patio, and found it was in poor condition. That changed the plan.

03

Pergola refitted

The glass edge and the pergola came down and were refitted, so the finished deck and its fittings sit together.

The extension

One material, not two.

While building off the patio, Ellis suggested extending the deck. The owners liked the idea.

They had seen the new deck going in and didn’t like the slabs around the pergola next to it. Instead of two different materials side by side, they chose to cover the lot in the same composite. The deck grew to about four times its original size, and the whole pool area now reads as one.

The finishing touches

Lights and a herringbone inlay.

The lighting and the inlay are what lifted this job from a good deck to the one people stop and look at.

A herringbone inlay is set into the middle of the deck, framed by a border, with lighting built in so the pool area works after dark as well. It was part of a bigger garden job, with steps and corners to work around too.

The access

Up a steep bank, down narrow lanes.

Getting to the garden was the hard part. The lanes into the village are tight and the garden sits up a steep bank.

It was also over 30 degrees while the deck went in. It was a lot of graft, and the finished pool deck is the proof it was worth it.

What's next

Extending it again, for a hot tub.

Ellis is extending this deck again. Where the pergola stands, the deck is going out another couple of metres to make room for a hot tub.

That is the benefit of a deck built right: it can grow with the garden. Thinking about a pool, hot tub or extension? See how Ellis builds with Trex.

“
We are absolutely delighted with our new decking! From start to finish, Ellis was a pleasure to work with and was happy to tweak the plans as the project progressed to make sure everything was exactly as we wanted. We've never met anyone quite as passionate about decking, which made us smile, but we also have nothing but respect for his craftsmanship and skill. Both Ellis and Liam were hardworking, easy-going, and maintained excellent communication throughout the entire process. We also really appreciated the extra help with the building of our pergola! Highly recommend.

We would like to thank Ellis for the advice, guidance & transformation of our dated & unsafe patio. Along with recommendations of Trex composite decking. He understood our brief and with his workforce executed it to the letter. His attention to detail was appreciated from start to finish including our choice of inlay of interconnected squares and all this was achieved within the agreed time & budget. Would highly recommend Ellis Decks, for the professional job which has been completed. We are looking forward to being able to enjoy our new decking in the near future. A big THANK YOU from S & D

I needed a new fence and a timber deck renewed at my property. I looked around a lot, found Ellis Decks, and through his photos I knew it was what I wanted. I had some samples of composite decking, but Ellis educated me about the differences between brands, and that Trex doesn't fade and has a proper guarantee - so although more expensive, it avoids the problems in the future. Ellis was punctual, friendly and went out of his way with his little worker Liam to make the dream a reality. Couldn't ask for a better outcome! Thank you Ellis Decks!!

Questions

Questions about this build.

What people usually ask after seeing it.

Can you build a deck around a swimming pool?

Yes. This Raglan pool deck runs all the way round the pool, with an inlay, lighting and a glass edge. Ellis looks at the levels, the drainage and how people will move around the pool before he designs it.

Can a deck be extended later?

It can. This one has already grown from about a quarter of its current size, and it is being extended again for a hot tub. If you think you may want to add to your deck, tell Ellis at the start so the frame is planned for it.

What if my current deck has failed?

Ellis looks at why. The frame, the groundwork and how the boards were fixed all matter, and the answer decides whether a repair is enough or a rebuild is better. Send him photos and he will tell you what he sees.

How do I get a deck like this?

Book a call and tell Ellis about your garden. He will talk you through the design and the Trex range and colour that suit it. You can see more of his work on the projects page.
