The Grofield, Abergavenny

Commercial decking for pubs and beer gardens

A beer garden takes more punishment than any garden deck: hundreds of feet a weekend, benches dragged about, pints going over. It needs to look good on a Friday night and still look good after the summer.

What matters for you

  • Spilled drinks and food that wipe off, not soak in
  • Heavy footfall and benches dragged every day
  • Safe underfoot when it rains mid-service

What Ellis builds

  • Beer garden decks and raised seating areas
  • Covered seating and smoking areas
  • Built-in bench seating, steps and ramps

What's different

What makes it commercial decking, not just a bigger garden deck.

A pub garden or terrace is used every day, by people who aren't looking where they're stepping. Ellis builds commercial decks with that in mind, from the frame up.

  • Stronger frame for footfall

A busy deck takes far more weight and movement than a garden deck, so the frame is built to Trex's guidance for commercial use.

  • Drainage and falls

Rain has to run off, not sit in puddles where people walk. The ground and frame are set up so water drains away from doors and seating.

  • Fixings that stay put

Hidden fixings hold each board down, so there are no screw heads to work loose, catch heels or snag chair legs.

  • Edges you can see

Steps and edges can be picked out in a contrasting board colour, so customers can see where the level changes.

  • Level access and ramps

Decks can sit level with your doors, with ramps and handrails where needed, so wheelchairs, buggies and deliveries get on easily.

  • Lighting for evening trade

Low-level lights in steps and edges keep the deck safe and inviting once the sun goes down.

We are absolutely delighted with our new decking! From start to finish, Ellis was a pleasure to work with and was happy to tweak the plans as the project progressed to make sure everything was exactly as we wanted. We've never met anyone quite as passionate about decking, which made us smile, but we also have nothing but respect for his craftsmanship and skill. Both Ellis and Liam were hardworking, easy-going, and maintained excellent communication throughout the entire process. We also really appreciated the extra help with the building of our pergola! Highly recommend.

I needed a new fence and a timber deck renewed at my property. I looked around a lot, found Ellis Decks, and through his photos I knew it was what I wanted. I had some samples of composite decking, but Ellis educated me about the differences between brands, and that Trex doesn't fade and has a proper guarantee - so although more expensive, it avoids the problems in the future. Ellis was punctual, friendly and went out of his way with his little worker Liam to make the dream a reality. Couldn't ask for a better outcome! Thank you Ellis Decks!!

Questions

Commercial decking FAQs.

The questions owners and managers ask Ellis most. Anything else, just ask.

Finished Trex deck with bench seating at The Grofield, Abergavenny
Is composite decking suitable for commercial use and high footfall?

Yes. Trex is built for heavy use. It won't rot, splinter or split, and it doesn't need staining, so it copes with a busy beer garden or terrace far better than timber. Ellis builds commercial decks on a stronger frame to suit the footfall.

What affects the cost of a commercial deck?

The size, how high it sits off the ground, access for materials, the Trex range, and extras like a roof or cover, ramps, handrails, steps, lighting and built-in seating. Phased work and tight access add time. Send Ellis photos and rough measurements and he'll give you a ballpark before visiting. No prices online, because no two sites are the same.

I lease my pub or premises. Can you still do it?

Yes. If your building is owned by a brewery, pub company or landlord, they'll usually need to approve the work first. Ellis can send a written quote and drawings for them to sign off.

Do I need planning permission for a commercial deck or beer garden?

Often, yes. Businesses don't get the same permitted development rights as houses, so a new deck or raised area may need planning permission. If you sell alcohol outside, your premises licence plan may also need updating. Check with your local council early. Ellis can supply drawings to help.

How soon can you start?

Spring and summer book up first. Plan over autumn and winter and your deck can be built and open before Easter, ready for your busiest months.

Will installation disrupt my business?

As little as possible. Ellis plans the start date around your diary, fences off the work area and keeps it tidy every day. Bigger sites can be built in phases so part of your outside space stays open.

How long does a commercial decking project take?

It depends on size and access. A single beer garden or terrace is often done in about a week, and bigger projects take two to four weeks. You'll get a clear timeline with your quote.

Can you do several lodges, caravans or units?

Yes. For holiday parks and multi-unit sites, Ellis can plan the work in batches, often over the quieter winter months, so every unit matches.

Can you build a covered smoking area?

Yes. In Wales a smoking shelter has to stay at least half open, so Ellis designs covered decks with that in mind. Check the final design with your council's licensing team.

Will it take a hot tub or heavy planters?

Yes, when it's planned for. A hot tub sits on its own properly supported base with the deck built around it, and the frame is designed for heavy planters or kegs.

Can you build ramps and level access?

Yes. Ellis can build ramps, wide steps and handrails, and design the deck so it's level with your doors where possible, so everyone can use it, including wheelchair users and parents with buggies.

Can you add cover, lighting or built-in seating?

Yes. Ellis can build in benches, steps, planters and deck lighting for evening trade, and design the deck around a pergola or covered area like the one at The Grofield.

Is Trex decking slippery when wet?

Trex boards have a textured surface that grips better than weathered, algae-covered timber, and they don't grow the green film that makes old decks slippery. Like any outdoor surface, keep it clean in shady, damp spots.

How do staff clean composite decking?

Warm soapy water and a stiff brush deals with most spills. For a deeper clean, Trex boards can be pressure washed on a wide fan setting, following Trex's cleaning guide. No sanding, staining or sealing, ever.

Can we use patio heaters or fire pits on it?

Composite boards can be marked by strong heat, so heaters and fire pits need the right base and distance. Ellis will talk you through Trex's guidance for your setup.

How long does commercial composite decking last?

Trex boards are made to last decades without rotting. The warranty for commercial use is different from the 25 to 50 year residential warranty, and Ellis will confirm exactly what covers your project in your quote.

How do payments work?

Payment terms, including any deposit and when the balance is due, are set out clearly in your written quote before you commit.

Do you accept purchase orders and provide invoices?

You get a written quote you can take to the owner, area manager or governors, and a proper invoice at the end.
